BEAUTY: S/S ’15 RUNWAY HAIR TRENDS

May 1, 2015

Runway shows set the tone for not only fashion, but also the hair and makeup looks that make just as much of a statement. We’ve scanned the collections from the designers of New York, Paris and Milan during fashion month and lined up this season’s 6 hair trends.

PONY-UP

High or low, crimped, sleek or messy, each had a place on the runway. The best part about this style: it accommodates those warm summer days, beach-wet tresses and seasonal humid weather. Try it crimped as seen at Stella McCartney’s runway show or a modern, innovative style from Cushnie et Ochs.

CALIFORNIA WAVES

Long manes are the biggest trend for S/S, and the best way to rock them is with effortless waves. This hair style is one that is timelessly chic, and designers like Chloé and Sonia Rykiel are just a few who used this easy, boho look.

BRAIDED

Probably the quickest hair style around, a plait is the ‘do that keeps on giving. The sleekest braids can look even better when made messier throughout the day. And with those post-braid waves, its a win-win. Two styles resulting from one quick braid makes this our favorite for a summer of traveling and beating unruly hair from the heat. Try one small braid among flowing waves as seen from Jeremy Scott, or cornrowed buns from Giorgio Armani and Bibhu Mohaparta.  You can also opt for a nontraditional technique of braiding a few strands to one side placed atop gathered hair as seen from Suno.

WET + SLEEK

Sleeked hair, no part. That was the vibe of designers Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, and Marni. The key is to keep the top of the hair, starting from the roots, glossy. The rest of the hair should remain untouched. This will give the appearance of that Gisele Bündchen, just-out-of-the-ocean, post-surfing, Chanel N°5-inspired look. Try it parted (Versace) or swept into a bun (Calvin Klein).

CHIC MATERIALS

We have this thing for accessories, and so adorning hair with any sort of embellished, floral or exotic material is right up our alley. Dolce & Gabbana is the designer that does it best with its golden flower barrettes and large, scarlet red flowers. Bring in crustacean pieces à la Valentino or the more playful leather pieces of Fendi’s collection. Feathers are also a very encouraged addition (thank you, Ohne Titel!)

BUN-NY

Besides the ponytail, this is an easy alternative for a quick hair solution. One of our favorite looks is Altuzarra’s low, heart-shaped buns. Try out buns that are braided, high-set, hollowed or effortlessly messy.
